Also known as the Edge of the World is the only island region in Russia, including the island of Sakhalin with adjacent small islands of Moneron and Tyuleniy, and the Kuril Islands, composing of 56 islands. The basis of the region island of Sakhalin, the largest in Russia, stretched for 948 km by meridian with the greatest width of 160 km and the smallest – of 26 km.

Nature has endowed Sakhalin and Kuriles Islands with beauty and grandeur. They have a surprising unity of the sultry south and the severe north, a multicolored combination of flora of taiga jungles and sunny meadows.
